Description
Dynamic 1847 Half Eagle, MS64
1847 $5 MS64 NGC. For a currently unexplained reason, more ounces of gold were converted to coin in 1847 than in any other year before the California gold discoveries. Nearly 1 million half eagles were coined in Philadelphia in 1847, including this piece that has few peers. Despite the high mintage, the average grade of surviving examples hovers near the AU55 grade level. The present example has stunning, reflective luster with bold design elements and rich lemon-yellow surfaces. A few tiny marks prevent a higher grade, but this piece ranks as one of the finest survivors known. Census: 9 in 64, 0 finer (9/09).(Registry values: P5)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25TL, PCGS# 8231, Greysheet# 8893)
Weight: 8.36 grams
