Description
Near-Gem 1847/7 Half Eagle
Extra 7 at Border
1847/7 $5 MS64 NGC. FS-301. Several prominent date-punch
errors exist for the high-mintage 1847 half eagle issue, though
only one, the FS-301 with the top of an errant 7 just above the
denticles, is listed in the Guide Book. On this Choice Mint
State representative, the top of the 7 is partly broken-down but
still visible to the unaided eye. Aside from the excitement of the
variety, this is a quality pre-Civil War Liberty half eagle,
sharply struck with blossoming yellow-gold luster and few
individually significant marks outside the left obverse field. For
the variety, Census: 5 in 64, 1 finer (1/12).(Registry values: P6)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25TL, PCGS# 8232, Greysheet# 8984)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
