Description
The Finest Known 1847-C Five, Ex: Colonel Green, King Farouk, Pittman
1847-C $5 MS65 PCGS. Winter 9-E. The Charlotte Mint used two obverse dies and one reverse die to produce 84,151 Half Eagles in 1847, the latter of which was also used to deliver the 1846-C. Examples of the Winter 9-E die marriage appear to be more common than those of the Winter 10-E variety. As a date, the 1847-C is also the most easily obtainable Half Eagle from the Charlotte Mint, with Winter speculating that 190-200 coins are extant. In high grade (AU-Mint State), however, the 1847-C has an extant population of perhaps 37-40 pieces, and it is more difficult to locate at these levels of preservation than survivors of the 1849-C, 1850-C, 1852-C, 1853-C, 1857-C, and 1858-C deliveries. This is the single finest certified 1847-C Half Eagle, and it is listed as the number one example on Winter's Condition Census. While many examples of this issue are softly impressed, this coin displays crisp definition over all devices with the possible exception of the reverse arrow feathers. The pleasingly colored, green-gold surfaces are semi-prooflike in finish with only a single mentionable vertical abrasion in the obverse field before Liberty's brow. A tiny spot in the center of the obverse is also useful for pedigree purposes.
Ex: Colonel E. H. R. Green; King Farouk; Palace Collection (Sotheby's, 3/54), lot 251; John Jay Pittman; Pittman Collection (Akers, 10/97), lot 982, where it realized $44,000.
