Description

1847-O Half Eagle, AU53
Famous New Orleans Rarity
Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr.

1847-O $5 AU53 NGC. Variety 1. Ex: Bass. The 1847-O is the rarest New Orleans half eagle issue. Only 12,000 pieces were struck, compared to the 571,500 O-mint eagles coined that year. NGC has certified only 46 examples in all grades (12/13). The present coin features original peach and sun-gold toning. Abrasions are relatively minor though we note strike-throughs (as made) on the lower obverse. The strike is good except on star 2 and the base of the mintmark.
