Description
Unheralded 1847-O Half Eagle, XF40
1847-O $5 XF40 NGC. The 1847-O half eagle is one of those unheralded early O-mint rarities that would likely be much more recognized and sought-after if it bore a C or D mintmark rather than an O. The meager emission of only 12,000 pieces in antebellum New Orleans ensured its rarity. This piece is about in the average grade for certified survivors, with antique-gold surfaces that show tinges of reddish-lilac in the protected areas of the lettering and devices. There is, of course, moderate wear, but there are few abrasions of any import. Census: 4 in 40, 25 finer (7/08). (Registry values: P8)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25TR, PCGS# 8235, GSID# 8987)
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
