Description

Conditionally Rare 1848 Half Eagle, MS63

1848 $5 MS63 PCGS. In spite of a considerable mintage of more than a quarter-million pieces, the 1848 half eagle is seldom found in XF or higher condition. This example offers wonderful eye appeal, with a bold (although not completely full) strike, pretty honey-gold color, and only light field hairlines and abrasions visible under a loupe. A light obverse die crack proceeds from the rim through the last 8, through the bust truncation and the lovelock to the hair cords. The star centrils are all bold, and the eagle shows only slight weakness on the right (facing) claw and the arrow feathers. Attesting to the condition rarity of this coin, PCGS has graded a total of six examples in MS63, with none finer (3/06).(Registry values: P5)
