Description
Choice Mint State 1848 Half Eagle
1848 $5 MS64 NGC. More than 260,000 pieces were struck of the 1848-P, but this issue is much scarcer than the mintage would suggest. It is also a conditional scarcity with pieces above XF seldom encountered, indicating that most of the mintage was dropped into circulation and stayed there. This is one of the very few high grade Mint State pieces known. The surfaces are bright and satiny, with above average striking details (but not quite full). Lightly abraded, this piece is most easily identifiable by a tiny alloy spot just in front of Liberty's nose and a series of other ones behind the hair bun. Interestingly, Breen notes that the date was punched in the die with a half cent logotype. Population: 5 in 64, 1 finer (7/04).(#8236) (Registry values: P5)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25TS, PCGS# 8236, Greysheet# 8894)
Weight: 8.36 grams
