Description

1848 Half Eagle, MS64
Just One Piece Numerically Finer

1848 $5 MS64 NGC. The mintage is deceiving for this rare, No Motto half eagle. Despite a substantial production of 260,775 pieces, few Mint State survivors remain. The Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection had a mini-hoard of seven examples, including several Mint State pieces.

The present coin is sharply struck and just a notch below the top Bass example, yet it is still a formidable condition rarity and a lustrous, near-Gem representative. The fields are semireflective and show the angled planchet striations that are typical of high-grade examples of the issue. A bit of cloudiness near the stars and a few light marks confirm the assigned grade, as does some minor blending of the eagle's neck feathers. Certified in a former generation holder. This coin is tied with three others at NGC at MS64, surpassed only by a single MS65 piece. The finest at PCGS is MS63. Census: 4 in 64, 1 finer (2/15).
