Description

1848-C Half Eagle, AU50
An Almost Uncirculated C-Mint Type Coin

1848-C $5 AU50 PCGS. This sharply struck example has nearly complete detail except for some minor weakness in the center of the reverse. The surfaces are clean with no deep marks noted; a couple of small ticks are visible in the obverse fields. The reverse is very choice. The luster on the obverse is slightly dull while it is richer in appearance on the reverse. However, this coin does not appear to have been cleaned or dipped and the overall appearance is very pleasing. Both sides exhibit light to medium green-gold with some coppery-rose shadings in the center of the reverse. This is a solid mid-range AU coin and a better example than most seen. In properly graded AU condition, the 1848-C is an underrated date. Housed in an old PCGS holder and conservatively graded by today's standards.
There are as many as 200 examples known of the 1848-C half eagle with many grading VF to XF. There are an estimated three dozen or so in the various AU grades, and examples that grade AU55 to AU58 are very scarce. There are an estimated five or six properly graded Uncirculated 1848-C half eagles known with the finest of these being the Eliasberg/Elrod coin that is graded MS63 by NGC.
