Remarkable 1848-C Half Eagle, AU55

1848-C $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 11-E. The only variety known. Dazzling luster radiates beneath the yellow-gold patina. There are no significant abrasions save for a shallow scratch in the field to the right of the eagle's head. Liberty's hair and several stars are soft, but the rest of the details are well-defined. A pleasing, conditionally scarce example. Census: 29 in 55, 24 finer (7/08).(Registry values: P4)
