Description

Important 1848-C MS 62 Liberty Half Eagle

1848-C $5 MS 62 PCGS. Although the 1848-C half eagle finishes in the second division among Charlotte five dollar issues for overall rarity, the vast majority of survivors grade XF or less, and even an accurately graded AU is very scarce. Mint State pieces can be counted on one hand. This remarkable Uncirculated 1848-C was first offered in our February 1999 Long Beach Sale where it was described as, '...an exceptionally pleasing coin whose surfaces are clean and problem-free, being quite unlike most '48-C fives which are usually found heavily abraded. The fields are semi-reflective, and the strike is somewhat soft over the highpoints of the design, as always.' Only the Eliasberg/Elrod piece, which now resides in a PCGS MS 64 holder, ranks higher on the Condition Census. Population: 1 in 62, 3 finer (2/00).
