Description

Important MS61 1848-C Half Eagle

1848-C $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 11-E, the only known die pair. This sun-gold half eagle lacks distracting marks, and luster is prevalent across the legends and devices. A good strike that shows pleasing definition despite minor blending on the claws and the ER in LIBERTY. Possibly struck from West Coast gold, which began to arrive from California via Panama in late 1848. A mintage of 64,472 pieces and an absence of contemporary local gold collectors ensures this Charlotte Mint issue is a formidable rarity in Mint State. None have been certified by either service in grades higher than MS64. Census: 3 in 61, 4 finer (5/08).(Registry values: P4)
