Description
Scarce Mint State 1848-C Five
1848-C $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 1. The 1848-C is a scarce C-mint five, even though 64,472 pieces were produced. It is also a condition rarity, with AU pieces rare and Uncirculated coins unknown until the past 10 years or so. The Condition Census for this issue includes coins that grade 64, 64, 63, 62, 62. This piece would place just below Winter's latest Condition Census (2008) in the third edition of the C-mint reference. This coin has an exceptionally sharp strike. The hair around Liberty's face shows strong definition for the issue, and the only weakness on the reverse is slight softness on the eagle's neck and left (facing) leg. Numerous small field marks appear on each side, none worthy of individual mention. Bright yellow-gold coloration complements just a tinge of reddish patina.(Registry values: P4)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25TT, PCGS# 8237, Greysheet# 8988)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
