Description

Satiny 1848-C Half Eagle, MS61

1848-C $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 11-E, the only known die pairing for the date. The mintage of 64,472 coins indicates a possibility that more varieties are waiting to be discovered. Some other Charlotte issues with similar or lower mintages have two or more known varieties. Examples include two varieties of 1849-C from a mintage of 64,823 coins, and three varieties of 1850-C from a mintage of 63,591 coins.
This Mint State example is undoubtedly in or near the Condition Census for the date, with only a few finer pieces certified by NGC or PCGS. Both companies have combined to grade just four coins at the 61 grade level and six finer pieces.
Both sides are sharply detailed and the surfaces are reflective, with pleasing green-gold color. A few insignificant marks on each side prevent a higher grade. Census: 3 in 61, 4 finer (10/07).(Registry values: P4)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25TT, PCGS# 8237, Greysheet# 8988)

Weight: 8.36 grams
