Description

Mid-Condition Census 1848-C Five Dollar, MS61

1848-C $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 11-E. The 1848-C is a scarce C-mint five, even though 64,472 pieces were produced. It is also a condition rarity, with AU pieces rare and Uncirculated coins unknown until the past 10 years or so. The Condition Census for this issue includes coins that grade 63, 62, 61, 58, 55. This piece is omitted on Winter's most recent Condition Census, but it should be positioned as a mid-Condition Census coin. This coin has an exceptionally sharp strike. The hair around Liberty's face shows strong definition for the issue, and the only weakness on the reverse is slight softness on the eagle's neck and left (facing) leg. Numerous small field marks are seen on each side, but none are worthy of individual mention. Bright yellow-gold coloration with just a tinge of reddish patina.(Registry values: P4)
