Description

1848-C Five Dollar, MS61
Rarely Seen in Mint State

1848-C $5 MS61 PCGS Secure. Variety 1. The 1848-C half eagle claims a mintage of 64,472 pieces, but the issue is more elusive than that relatively high production total would suggest, especially in high grade. The coins were released into the channels of commerce at the time of issue and few were saved for numismatic purposes. Most examples seen today are in the VF-XF grade range, and Mint State coins are rare.

The present coin is an attractive MS61 with well-detailed design elements that show a touch of the usual softness on the eagle's legs. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces exhibit the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade and display a mix of satiny mint luster and semiprooflike reflectivity in the sheltered areas. Population: 2 in 61, 3 finer (7/18).(Registry values: P4)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25TT, PCGS# 8237, Greysheet# 8988)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
