Description

1848-C Five, Semiprooflike MS64
Tied for Finest Known

1848-C $5 MS64 PCGS Secure. CAC. Variety 1. There are two wonderful, high-grade examples known of this date and it is six of one and a half dozen of the other which is the "best." The present example has wonderful yellow-gold color and glowing semiprooflike texture in the fields, an unusual trait for this date. The strike shows just a bit of softness in the centers on both sides but is certainly not an impediment to this coin's beauty. There is a shallow vertical mark at the end of Liberty's chin and a small cluster of marks between star 5 and the chin; the reverse shows a few moderate grease stains as made. A coin of impeccable beauty with a great pedigree to boot.
The grade distribution of the 1848-C half eagle is similar to that seen for the quarter eagle of this date. Both issues are reasonably common in VF and XF grades, scarce in the lower AU range, rare to very rare in properly graded AU58, and extremely rare in Uncirculated. There are around five 1848-C half eagles that are fully Mint State coins and the two finest are clearly the example in the Cherokee County collection and another MS64.
