Description
1848-C Half Eagle, XF45
Challenging in Finer Grades
1848-C $5 XF45 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1. Doug Winter writes of
this issue: "The 1848-C half eagle is scarcer than its reasonably
high mintage figure of nearly 65,000 coins would suggest." He goes
on to estimate that only 250 to 350 examples are extant in all
grades, and that most of these are in the VF to XF range. This
Choice XF coin is highly appealing for the grade, with rich
orange-gold coloration over both sides, and only slight high-point
wear. No major abrasions are noted, and the design definition is
above-average for the issue. Population: 29 in 45, 72 finer. CAC: 9
in 45, 26 finer (10/24).Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2014), lot 4435.(Registry values: P4)
