    Description

Finest Known 1848-D Half Eagle, Bright and Lustrous MS63

1848-D $5 MS63 NGC. Winter 15-J. Die State III. Undoubtedly the finest known example of this scarcer issue. Only 95-105 pieces are believed extant in all grades with a mere 2-3 examples known in Uncirculated condition. The surfaces are bright orange-gold with a pronounced glimmer of semi-prooflikeness in the fields. Sharply defined on the figure of Liberty with the usual softness evident on the neck of the eagle. In addition to the diagnostic weakness on star 3, there are actually no obvious abrasions that can be used to trace the pedigree of this important piece of Dahlonega gold. Population: 1 in 63, 0 finer (10/02).
From the Ashland City Collection. (NGC ID# 25TU, PCGS# 8238)
