1848-D $5 VF25 PCGS. CAC. Winter 20-L. Ex: The Fairmont
Collection. This delightful half eagle from the Dahlonega Mint
exhibits original olive-gold surfaces splashed with subtle orange
accents. Typical softness shows on Liberty's hair curls, the left
obverse stars and denticles, and on the eagle's neck. A planchet
void is seen at the base of the eagle's shield (as struck). The
devices are attractively bordered with tiny bits of russet matter
that attest to its originality. Only 11 Mint State pieces are
reported at PCGS (10/25).Ex: U.S. Coins / Fairmont Collection (Stack's Bowers, 3/2021), lot 5741.(Registry values: P3)
