Description

Underrated 1848-D/D Five Dollar Rarity, AU58 PCGS

1848-D/D $5 AU58 PCGS. D Over Low D. Winter 16-K. Die State II. The more common of the two die states of Winter 16-K, the undermintmark is only partially visible. Winter does not know whether the undermintmark wore off the die after successive strikings, or a Mint employee effaced it at some point during the production run. This is a green-gold example with flashy features and a bright, semi-prooflike finish. The obverse is unusually well defined for this often poorly produced issue, with crisp definition over Liberty's hair curls and the star centrils. The reverse is also sharp in most areas, but incompleteness of detail is noted over the eagle's neck feathers. There is some scuffiness in the fields, and scattered abrasions are seen on both sides, but the surfaces are suitably well preserved for a circulated Half Eagle from this branch mint.
As an issue, the 1848-D is equally as rare as the 1855-D, both of which have extant populations of perhaps 95-105 coins (per Winter, 1997). Of this total, perhaps 25-35 '48-D Half Eagles are of the Winter 16-K (D Over Low D) variety. Most of these overmintmark examples grade no finer than XF, and examples above the AU55 grade level are of the utmost rarity. We last offered an AU58 PCGS representative of the 1848-D/D as lot 7684 in our 1999 Chicago ANA Signature Sale. That coin, part of the Chestatee Collection, realized $7,763.
