Lustrous Mint State 1849-C Half Eagle

1849-C $5 MS61 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1. The digit 1 in the date is slightly below the bust truncation, while on the reverse, in its usually seen die state, a die crack runs from the leaves directly to the rim, grazing the upper left serif of the U in UNITED. The original mintage was 64,800 pieces, although today Mint State pieces are scarce. The five finest at PCGS range from MS62-MS64, putting this piece just outside of the Condition Census. This lustrous piece has semiprooflike fields beneath the light field chatter, with attractive greenish-gold coloration. The peripheral strike is sharp, although some weakness shows on the hair beneath LIBE and on the eagle's legs, fletchings, and claws at the lower reverse.
