Description

Desirable Mint State 1849-C Half Eagle

1849-C $5 MS61 PCGS. The 1849-C is the most obtainable C-mint Half Eagle produced before 1850, both in terms of overall scarcity and condition scarcity. Our experience places the number of Mint State survivors in the neighborhood of a dozen coins, a slightly figure than is often quoted. The example offered here displays a slightly granular, olive-gold obverse with isolated flatness on a few of Liberty's hair curls, also the location of a few trivial pinscratches. More of a reflective finish is seen on the reverse and, as occasionally found in varying degrees on high grade '49-C Fives, there is an unfinished area below the eagle's left (facing) wing. A die crack extends from the denticles before the U in UNITED into the olive branch. Population: 3 in 61, 6 finer (7/04).(#8241) (Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25TW, PCGS# 8241, Greysheet# 8991)
