    Description

    1849-C Half Eagle, MS63
    Rare in Mint State

1849-C $5 MS63 NGC. Variety 1. The 1849-C is one of the more plentiful half eagle issues from the Charlotte Mint, with 275 to 375 examples extant, per Doug Winter, but it is also one of the better-struck dates overall, which makes it ideal for the collector seeking a single representative from this facility. At the Mint State level, however, survivors are rare, following the pattern of the other C-mint issues in the Liberty half eagle series.

This piece displays bold stars and border dentils, and the central devices show just a touch of striking softness on the eagle's left (facing) leg and the hair curls around Liberty's face. Flashy yellow-gold surfaces display a bright appearance when tilted beneath a light, and reveal few immediately obvious bag marks or other heavy abrasions. Census: 4 in 63, 3 finer (9/14).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# C5XD, PCGS# 8241)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
