1849-D $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 25-T. Ex: Rive d'Or Collection. This is a rare variety of the 1849-D half eagle, with the mintmark far right and touching the branch stem. The 1849-D as a date is more elusive than one would expect for the mintage of 39,036 coins, with less than 200 coins believed extant. This Choice AU example displays pleasing greenish-gold patina and bold detail. Scattered light abrasions are characteristic of the issue.
