Description
Important 1850-C Half Eagle in Mint State
1850-C $5 Weak C MS 61 NGC. Among the more easily obtainable C-mint half eagles from the 1850s, the 1850-C has an original mintage of 63,591 pieces. We have handled a few BU examples over the past several years, most recently a similarly graded NGC coin that realized $8,970 as lot 494 in our March 2000 Ft. Lauderdale Bullet Auction. The present example displays an above average strike for the issue with bold definition everywhere except over Liberty's hair curls. Both sides are frosty with solid luster quality for the grade, and the scattered abrasions are small in size and relatively few in number. Although weakly impressed, the mintmark is discernible at certain angles.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25U2, Variety PCGS# 98244, Base PCGS# 8244, GSID# 8994)
