Description

Elusive About Uncirculated 1850 Dahlonega Five

1850-D $5 AU50 PCGS. Winter 18-M, the only known dies. While most extant 1850-D Half Eagles (Winter reports that there are 90-100 pieces, 1997) grade VF or XF, this fortunate survivor exhibits only light wear that is mostly confined to the highpoints. The honey-gold features display average striking detail for a D-mint gold coin with some softness of detail evident here and there. Of particular note is the D mintmark, which is noticeably indistinct. There are scattered abrasions from time spent in circulation, but virtually none are individually conspicuous. In high grades (AU-MS), the 1850-D ranks fourth in rarity among D-mint Half Eagles. Only 43,984 pieces were originally produced.
