Splendid 1850-D Half Eagle, AU55
1850-D $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 23-O. The obverse has a tall date with the 1 close to the bust and the border. The reverse has the mintmark high over VE, with its left serif joined to the feather and its upper right curve separated from the branch. The other obverse, number 24, has the top of the 1 lightly joined to the bust, with the bottom left foot well above the border. The other reverse, letter P, has the mintmark touching the stem but distant from the feather, according to Doug Winter's description.This pleasing Choice AU has lovely greenish yellow-gold luster with deeper patina in the fields on both sides. The strike is weak at the centers, as usual, but the mintmark is bold. Population: 16 in 55, 10 finer (7/08).(Registry values: P3)
