Description

Very Rare Variety 17-F 1851-C Five

1851-C $5 XF45 PCGS. This is the extremely rare die marriage listed as Variety 17-G in the Winter standard reference. The "G" designation is inaccurate, since the reverse differs from the usual 16-G variety. The mintmark is much lower in the field and rests above the V instead of the E. It is the F reverse from 1849, with a radial die crack near the U in UNITED. The obverse die shows the second 1 in the date slightly higher, virtually touching the bust. There is no punchmark on the lobe of Liberty's ear, unlike 16-G. The base of the first 1 in the date is repunched northwest. A search of Heritage Permanent Auction Archives, which images dozens of '51-C fives, failed to locate another example from these dies.
The present piece retains its "original skin." Golden-tan patination bathes the borders. The borders are sharply struck, while Liberty's curls and the fletchings show some incompleteness of strike. An important opportunity for the specialist.(Registry values: P4)
