    1851-D Five Dollar, AU53
    Scarce Date, Rare Die Combination

1851-D $5 AU53 NGC. Variety 30-V. A rare variety, showing the only documented use of the obverse die, which is distinctive for the far-left placement of the date. The reverse was used for two varieties in 1851, and it shows the mintmark far right, touching the branch stem. As a date, the 1851-D half eagle is scarce. Doug Winter estimates that only 135 to 185 pieces are extant. This AU-level coin has bright yellow-gold patina and is deficiently struck in the centers, as is normal for the date. Winter writes: "The 1851-D is one of the more poorly struck Dahlonega half eagles from the 1850's." Scattered abrasions accompany slight high-point wear but do not detract.(Registry values: P3)
