    1851-D Five Dollar, AU53
    Better Dahlonega Date

1851-D $5 AU53 NGC. Variety 31-W, as usual. Despite a mintage of 62,710 coins, Doug Winter calls the 1851-D "one of the rarest half eagles from the Dahlonega Mint." As few as 135 to 185 pieces are thought to be extant, mostly in VF and XF grades. This About Uncirculated representative displays bright, satiny yellow-gold surfaces with mild field chatter. The coin upholds the issue's reputation as a weak strike, showing incompleteness on the central portrait and eagle, and along the lower obverse border dentils. Census: 23 in 53, 51 finer (8/16).
