Description
1851-D Five Dollar, AU55
Surprisingly Difficult D-Mint Issue
1851-D $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 26-R. The 1851-D half eagle is
surprisingly difficult to locate when one considers the original
mintage of 62,710 pieces. The total number of examples known today
is in the range of only 115-135 pieces. Of these, perhaps 25
specimens are in AU grades. The peripheral design elements of this
coin are deeply impressed, but the centers are somewhat weak, as is
typical for the issue. The eagle's leg feathers are especially
ill-defined. The pleasing greenish-gold surfaces are only lightly
abraded. Census: 24 in 55, 31 finer (2/10).From The Lucy Llewellyn Collection of Southern Gold.(Registry values: P3)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25U7, PCGS# 8248, Greysheet# 8998)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
