    Description

    1851-D Five Dollar, MS60
    Very Rare in Mint State

1851-D $5 MS60 NGC. Variety 31-W. The first 1 in the date joins a denticle and the second 1 is close to the neck. The base of the first 1 is repunched. The upright of the mintmark is over the left serif of the E in FIVE, and is away from both the stem and the feather.

The yellow-gold surfaces of this MS60 specimen exhibit strong definition in the stars, the hair atop Liberty's head, and the bun. The mintmark is bold and the eagle's wing feathers are stronger than usually seen on this issue. Liberty's curls around the face and the eagle's legs show the typical weakness. Both sides reveal fewer marks than might be expected for the designated grade. Census: 3 in 60, 9 finer (8/13).(Registry values: P3)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25U7, PCGS# 8248)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper

With the superb catalog, a masterwork prepared by Mark Borckhardt, the sale was destined to meet all of my expectations; that it did, and then some. Be assured that I would highly recommend Heritage Auctions to any of my associates contemplating the sale
