    1851-D Half Eagle, Lustrous MS61
    Extremely Rare in Mint State

1851-D $5 MS61 PCGS. Variety 31-V. "The 1851-D is one of the rarest half eagles from the Dahlonega Mint": writes Doug Winter in Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, third edition. The same author estimates that only 135 to 185 pieces are extant in all grades, negating the accuracy of the more than 250 pieces reported by PCGS and NGC combined. The rarity of this issue is most plainly seen in Mint State, where Winter suggests that "only four or five" exist against a certified population of a dozen pieces at the two services combined.

The present coin is not only a great condition rarity, but it is also abnormally well-struck for the issue. Only insignificant incompleteness is seen on the eagle's left (facing) leg and the hair curls around Liberty's face, and this requires a loupe to discern. The lustrous orange-gold surfaces show expected chatter but retain pleasant eye appeal. Population: 2 in 61, 2 finer (9/16).(Registry values: P3)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25U7, PCGS# 8248)
