    1851-D Five Dollar, MS62
    Among the Finest Known

1851-D $5 MS62 NGC. Variety 31-W. Four die pairings were used to strike the 62,700 pieces produced of the 1851-D half eagle. Yet, in spite of its generous mintage (relative to other D- and C-mint fives), the 1851-D is one of the rarest Dahlonega half eagles. Doug Winter, in his latest reference on the Dahlonega coinage, ranks it fifth of the 26 issues in the series, and third in high-grade rarity. That places this coin toward the top of a very scarce issue in any grade. The central strike details are soft on Liberty's curls around the face and weakness is also seen in the center of the reverse, while the margins are well-defined on each side. The orange-gold tinted mint luster is outstanding, and the only marks of consequence are a Z-shaped series above the eagle's right (facing) wing. Census: 3 in 62, 2 finer (11/13).(Registry values: P3)
