1851-D Weak D Half Eagle
AU53, Variety 26-O
1851-D $5 Weak D AU53 PCGS. Variety 26-O. The first 1 in the
date is imbedded in a denticle and shows noticeable repunching. An
additional diagnostic for this variety is the die crack running
from the lower serif of D in the denomination through the bottom
part of FIVE and the upper portions of UNITED STATE. Only the upper
right curve of the D mintmark is barely visible on this AU53
specimen. Peach-gold surfaces display hints of light green, and
traces of luster in the recesses. This piece is slightly better
defined than most 1851-Ds, that is rated as one of the more poorly
struck Dahlonega half eagles from the 1850s ( Douglas Winter,
2003). A few inoffensive circulation marks are noted on each side.Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 98248, Base PCGS# 8248, GSID# 8999)
