Description

1851-D Half Eagle, MS60
Scarce, Underrated Date and Variety

1851-D $5 Weak D MS60 NGC. Winter 31-U. Weak D. The upright and upper curve of the D mintmark are barely discernible on this very scarce Dahlonega die pair. The first 1 in the date shows a repunched base that touches a denticle. A slender die crack surrounds the left reverse legend, while bright luster outlines the borders and devices. The eagle's neck and fletchings are characteristically weak on this die pair, with only the mintmark's top curve visible. NGC reports only four Mint State examples of this challenging variety, with none certified at PCGS. NGC Census: 0 in 60, 0 finer (1/25).
