Description
Frosty Near-Gem 1852 Half Eagle
Few Certified Finer
1852 $5 MS64 NGC. Frosty yellow-gold at the centers cedes to
antique-gold coloration near the rims on each side of this near-Gem
piece, among the finest survivors of the large antebellum mintage
exceeding 573,000 circulation strikes. As silver coinage failed to
circulate during this time due to its overvaluation against gold,
most gold coinage went directly into circulation and stayed there.
There are few abrasions on either side. The strike is bolder than
it might appear, as the weakness on the vertical shield lines is
clearly due to die lapping rather than strike deficiency. Census:
13 in 64, 3 finer (3/12).(Registry values: P4)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UA, PCGS# 8250, Greysheet# 8898)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
