Description

1853 Five Dollar, MS64+
Exceptional for the Grade

1853 $5 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. The 1853 is a plentiful issue in the context of No Motto half eagles but, like most issues from this period, Mint State coins are scarce and are rare at the Choice grade level. This piece is one of two Choice examples at PCGS, both Plus-graded, and there are two coins finer (9/15). The other MS64+ realized more than $17,000 in the Houston Signature sale (Heritage, 12/2014), lot 3777. We feel the present piece is superior to that example in terms aesthetic merit. The eagle's talons and neck feathers are noticeably sharper, and the satiny straw-gold surfaces are remarkably smooth for the grade. Even upon close study with a lens, it is difficult to discern grade-limiting flaws. Eye appeal is unusually high. For type purposes, this piece is hard to beat.(Registry values: P4)
