    Description

    Lustrous AU 1853-D Half Eagle

1853-D $5 Large D AU58 PCGS. Variety 29-T. This is one of four die varieties known for 1853-D, all from a single obverse die, and each having a large D mintmark. The obverse has a long, thin die line from the leading edge of the coronet, through the two lower points of star 6 and to the border. On this reverse, the D is high and left, with the upright over the center of V in FIVE. The left top nearly touches a talon to the left, and the tip of the arrow feather is very close over the center of the upright of D. Although not fully struck, the mintmark is boldly defined. The surfaces on both sides have nearly full luster and excellent yellow-gold color.(#8255)(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25UF, PCGS# 8255)
