Description

1853-D Half Eagle, MS63
Beautiful Semiprooflike Fields

1853-D $5 Large D MS63 PCGS Secure. Variety 35-AA. The 1853-D is the most plentiful issue in the Dahlonega Liberty half eagle series, the obvious choice for type collectors. However, its availability declines in Mint State. Doug Winter writes of the issue: "It is rare in Uncirculated with around two dozen known. Most of these are in the Mint State-60 to Mint State-62 range. In Mint State-63, this date is very rare. ... there are no Gems."

This Select example is of a quality that simply does not exist for many of the other issues in the Dahlonega series. The interior definition, and that of the stars, is impressively sharp, and the fields display noteworthy semiprooflike reflectivity. The border dentils are weakly defined, however, as is typical of this issue. Brightly lustrous, and attractively free of bothersome abrasions. Population: 6 in 63, 2 finer (8/15).(Registry values: P1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UF, PCGS# 8255, Greysheet# 9004)
