Description

1853-D Half Eagle, MS63, Ex: Green Pond
Winter Plate Coin, Tied for Second Finest

1853-D $5 Large D MS63 PCGS. Variety 29-V. Ex: Green Pond. The 1853-D is the most available Dahlonega half eagle, making it an excellent choice for mintmark type collectors. This piece boasts a marvelous pedigree from the Green Pond Collection, which we handled in our 2004 FUN Signature. At the time, we wrote:

"The Green Pond Collection of Dahlonega Gold is one of the finest complete collections of these rarities ever assembled, holding dual PCGS Registry leadership as the #1 Current and #1 All-Time Finest Dahlonega Collection. The overall quality of every coin is simply incredible, with many 'finest known' and 'Condition Census' survivors. Nearly every Green Pond rarity is a plate coin in the second edition of Doug Winter's Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, 1838-1861."

The present piece is far better-struck than normal for the issue, with the reverse particularly sharp. Complete denticles appear on both sides. A planchet flaw runs from behind Liberty's head, ending near star 12. The surfaces are clean for the grade, orange-red on the obverse and greenish-gold on the reverse. The mint luster is heavier on the reverse than on the obverse. Eye appeal is excellent overall. Plate coin in the Winter second edition. Population: 5 in 63, 1 finer (12/11).
