Description

First of Two Uncirculated 1853-D Half Eagles

1853-D MS 60 PCGS. Only when major collections such as the Miller Collection come up for public auction are multiples of Southern gold coins offered in Mint State grades. With the '53-D being one of the more common fives from the Dahlonega mint, it is one of the few issues that can be found in such lofty condition. This piece has bright, green-gold surfaces with a semi-prooflike luster that is only tempered by a hint of scuffiness in the fields. Generally well struck save for the obverse border and, on the reverse, the eagle's neck and arrow feathers below. Population: 3 in 60, 11 finer (11/98).

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UF, PCGS# 8255, Greysheet# 9004)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
