Description
Pleasing 1853-D MS 61 Five Dollar
1853-D MS 61 NGC. While the evidence is clear that the '53-D is the most available Dahlonega half eagle, it does not follow that Uncirculated examples are easy to locate. Such coins are infrequently offered and the vast majority of known specimens grade no finer than VF or XF. Perhaps fewer than 20 pieces are known in Mint State. The strike on this second high grade '53-D is unusually bold, with little bluntness at the obverse edge and only a trace of graininess from 6 o'clock to 9 o'clock. The center of the reverse is noticeably stronger on this piece and well above average for the issue. Luster is typically vibrant and the color here is a light to medium orange-gold. Population: 7 in 61, 4 finer (11/98).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UF, PCGS# 8255, Greysheet# 9004)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
