Description

1854 FS-101 Half Eagle, MS61
Doubled Die Obverse

1854 $5 Doubled Die Obverse, FS-101, MS61 PCGS. CAC. Perhaps the first mention of this interesting variety was lot 441 in the November 2000 Bowers and Merena catalog for Part IV of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection. The variety was described as from a "die with 'earring' at Liberty's ear lobe, no doubt a centering mark." This is a charming peach-gold example that exhibits vibrant luster throughout the borders. The well struck surfaces lack any mentionable marks. Population: 2 in 61, 3 finer (11/16).
