Not Sold Description
Lustrous MS64 1854 Five Dollar
A Notable Condition Rarity From the 1850s
1854 $5 MS64 NGC. Specialists will surely appreciate this
coin for the condition rarity that it is. The mintage of 160,675
pieces really does not give one an indication of the rarity of this
date in AU and Uncirculated grades. Probably less than 200 pieces
are extant today in the various grades of AU. But it is in mint
condition that the 1854 really shines as a condition rarity. Fewer
than 100 pieces are known in all Uncirculated grades. At the MS64
level, this is one of only seven coins certified by both of the
major services, and none are finer (8/07). The surfaces are softly
frosted and there are only the smallest abrasions present, none of
which are worthy of mention. Sharply struck, except of course on
the eagle's neck, as always seen on half eagles from this
era.(Registry values: P5)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25UG, PCGS# 8256, GSID# 8900)
