    Description

    1854-D Variety 36-AA Half Eagle, AU58
    Minutely Repunched Mintmark

1854-D $5 Large D AU58 NGC. Variety 36-AA. The mintmark shows slight recutting below. 1854 marked the beginning of a gradual decline in gold production at Dahlonega, obviously related to the opening of the San Francisco Mint that year. In previous years, California gold mining markedly increased gold production at all of the Mints, including Charlotte and Dahlonega. Mottled orange and blue patina appears on the lustrous yellow surfaces of this near-Mint half eagle. The pleasing surfaces exhibit trivial grade-consistent marks.
