1854-D Five, Uncirculated Details
Scarce Medium D Variety

1854-D $5 Medium D -- Altered Surfaces -- PCGS Genuine. Unc Details. Variety 37-CC (formerly 31-W). The surfaces of this Dahlonega five appear mattelike, with a lightly textured surface covering the entire coin -- similar to coins exposed for long periods in seawater. The result is a lusterless and subdued look, but sharp detail remains. The reason for the PCGS Altered Surfaces designation is unclear, whether it is for the textured appearance or perhaps for loss of detail by the eagle's tail and arrow fletchings, which we feel is caused by a weak strike rather than any other kind of surface alteration. A curious coin, but still interesting and appealing as the Medium D variety, described by Doug Winter as "very scarce." A few small abrasions are seen on the coin, the most noteworthy being a shallow scrape by star 12.(Registry values: P3)
