Description

1854-D Half Eagle, AU55
Uncommonly Sharp Throughout

1854-D $5 Medium D AU55 NGC. Variety 37-CC. The 1854-D half eagle usually comes poorly struck, particularly around the border. However, Doug Winter writes in Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: "Some are known which are stronger at the border and which show less pronounced beveling of the rims. These pieces are quite rare." Such is the present coin. This Choice AU 1854-D half eagle displays bold peripheral dentils and impressively sharp central devices -- the central eagle and shield are essentially full. Some satiny luster remains in the fields, and the surfaces are devoid of bothersome abrasions. Honey-gold patina warms truly outstanding eye appeal.
