Description

1854-D Half Eagle, Near-Mint
Very Scarce Medium D Mintmark

1854-D $5 Medium D AU58 NGC. Variety 37-CC (formerly 31-W). The mintmark is distant from the feather and the branch, and its upright is over the left serif of the E in FIVE. Per Doug Winter, "This variety is very scarce and it should sell for a premium over the Large D mintmark." The wheat-gold surfaces retain ample luster and are only lightly marked. The strike shows blending on the curls and upper and lower extremities of the eagle, characteristic of Dahlonega issues.(Registry values: P3)
